Haiga
Haiga, or ‘Haiku Picture’ derives from a traditional Japanese art form combining sumi-e ink drawings and haiku. Modern haiga often use photography and digital art to achieve the same effect, combining visual images and text that enhance and complement each other.
These works of haiga came out of a 2026 Haiku writing class at GNACE (Greater Newburyport Adult and Community Education).
The works are by these four artists:
Elizabeth Rose is a psychotherapist and writer. She has published essays in The Boston Globe, Anti-Heroin Chic, Valiant Scribe, The Persimmon Tree, The Shanti Arts Review, and others. Her poetry has been published or is forthcoming in BarBar, Verdad, and The Phylum Press. She received her MFA in creative non-fiction from Lesley University in 2019. She leads a weekly group called Poetry of Gratitude and Hope at the Newburyport Senior Center. The group enhances personal well-being through poetry and community.
Nancy Winkler finds that writing haiku deepens her connection to the natural world. Several of her haiku have been published in Tricycle Magazine. She currently teaches classes in haiku and haiga at GNACE, while also creating sculpture and taking photographs.
Janet Parker is a longtime visual artist and painter who for the last several years has also been writing poetry. She joined Nancy’s haiku class and was inspired by the idea of combining these two artistic forms. Janet lives in Beverly Massachusetts.
Margaret Ohrn is a public-school teacher and poet. Her poems have been published in journals such as Crab Orchard Review, The Midwest Quarterly and The South Florida Poetry Journal. She practices poetry with a variety of local groups. Since taking Nancy’s haiku class through GNACE, she has been inspired by the intersection of visual art, nature and poetry.

Landscape photography was his first love and that's what feeds his creative soul. He loves being out in nature, at all times of the day. He's thankful he can do this and can't imagine doing anything else.
"As a professional fine art and landscape photographer, photography has been the driving force in my life. From the moment I made my first photograph as a junior in high school, I fell in love with the work of Ansel Adams and the power of the photographic image to capture the beauty and essence of the world around us."
